OSCAR DOCS - 2

Warriors of Qiugang

4.1 Miles by Daphne Matziaraki (2016) (USA/Greece) (25m)

Made for the New York Times, this is a compelling film with no voiceover and no interviewer. It simply shows the efforts of a Greek coast guard boat, stationed on the small island of Lesbos, as it is constantly attempting to rescue refugees stranded on overcrowded boats in the Aegean Sea. The refugees, crammed onto the boats by dispassionate people smugglers, are trying to make it from Turkey to Greece, a crossing of 4.1 miles.

Warriors of Qiugang

A Girl in the River by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (2015) (Pak) (40m)

A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness won the Oscar in 2016. It tells the story of Saba, a Pakistani woman who managed to escape from an attempted honour killing by her father and uncle. In an examination of the Pakistani justice system, we learn how Saba narrowly escaped with her life after being shot and left for dead, simply because she married the man once promised to her.

Saving Face

Saving Face by Junge & Obaid-Chinoy (2012) (USA/Pak) (40m)

Saving Face by Daniel Junge and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy won the Academy Award for Best Short Documentary in 2012. It explores the many acid attacks in Pakistan, where each year hundreds of people - mostly women - have acid thrown in their face. Saving Face follows the story of several of these survivors, their fight for justice, and a Pakistani plastic surgeon who has returned to help them restore their faces and their lives. Get ready to cry!

Warriors of Qiugang

The Warriors of Qiugang by Ruby Yang (2010) (China) (40m)

Ruby Yang had already been nominated with her short documentary, The Blood Of Yingzhou District, which looked at the ostracized AIDS orphans in China. In The Warriors Of Quigang she follows a group of villagers in rural China as they take on a chemical company that is poisoning their land and water. As they fight to transform their environment, they find themselves transformed as well. Yang explores how the new China conflicts with the old.
