ED'S FAVOURITES - 6

Photograph of Jesus by Laurie Hill (2008) (UK) (7m)

Photograph Of Jesus is a hard film to categorise, which is perhaps why I like it so much. It is a funny, interesting, stop-motion, animation documentary about some of the weirder and more asinine requests for photographs at Getty Images (including the request for a photograph of Jesus). It is narrated by an archivist Matthew Butson and is the second short film by London-based animator Laurie HIll.

Blue Hole by Erik Gardner (2012) (USA) (12m) 15 Certificate

Blue Hole was a big hit on the horror film festival circuit. With a clever, circular idea at its core, Blue Hole tells the story of an eerie lake, near a cabin in the woods, that is said to be the dwelling place of the Devil. A couple staying at the cabin read up on the legend and decide to visit the lake, only for the entity within the water to pull the woman in. Based on the unfinished writings about the lake, the man believes he can retrieve her...

Keith Reynolds

Keith Reynolds Can't Make It... by Felix Massie (2008) (UK) (6m)

Keith Reynolds Can't Make It Tonight is a sly animation to have on the Best of the UK page because it is apparently set in the USA (though the spelling of 'tonight' ensures we all know that it is in fact British). It tells the story of Keith Reynolds, a man who has worked at the same company for eight years and believes he is going to be promoted today, the key to getting his co-worker, Sarah, to like him. It all, of course, goes horribly and amusingly wrong.

Dead Bird

Warhol by Adam Ethan Crow (2014) (UK/USA) (19m)

Warhol was the joint winner in the competition and, although set in New York, was written and directed by the British filmmaker Adam Ethan Crow. It tells the story of quick-witted but fading shock-jock Dave Dawson who, having been consigned to a late night slot, is desparate to prove himself. His producer has to babysit Dave but finds himself unable to stop things getting out of control when a young caller rings in pretending to be a criminal, just as an intruder is breaking into the kid's house.
